Cleobury Mortimer

The Market Town of Cleobury Mortimer is known as ‘The Gateway to Shropshire and lies nestled in the south Shropshire hills near to the border with Worcestershire. The town is on the A4117, between the mediaeval splendour of Ludlow to the west and Kidderminster, the home of the carpet industry, in the East. Travel to Cleobury Mortimer is easiest by road. Ludlow and Kidderminster are about 25 minutes away by car and Birmingham and Shrewsbury are within an hour.
The history of Cleobury Mortimer can be traced back to before the Norman Conquest, with evidence of Iron Age fortification at Castle Toot. The Cleobury part of the name is probably drawn from the contraction of the old English clifu meaning a steep place and bury meaning fortified settlement. The second part the name is less contentious and came from the influence of the Norman Lord Roger de Mortemer to whom the land was given after the Norman Conquest.
The town boasts a number of interesting architectural features, including the curved Victorian and Georgian buildings on the high street and the 12th century magnificence of the parish Church. St. Mary the Virgin, is one of a small group of churches to have crooked spires, many by design. However, Cleobury Mortimer's crooked spire is as a result of warping of the oak beams that support it.
